Grilled Cheese Hot Dogs

So many textures. So cheesy gooey.

Fusion foods are a great way to try new food creations. Grilled cheese sandwiches and hot dogs seems like a match made in … well, your kitchen. Crispy and gooey, these are amazing. This recipe is for 4 servings, but it does scale if you are aiming to feed a larger group.

METHOD

1.      Using a sharp knife, score the hot dogs across the top in a crisscross pattern.

2.      Grill the hot dogs for about 5-7 minutes or until crispy and blistering.

3.      While the hot dogs are cooking, brush the melted butter on the insides of the buns.

4.      Using a griddle or flat top at medium heat, place the buns, butter side down, on the surface and brown for about a minute. Keep an eye on them so they don’t burn.

5.      Set the buns aside and make bun length piles of shredded cheese using 1/4 c. for each pile.

6.      Cover each cheese pile with the bun to help the cheese melt.

7.      Once the cheese has melted, use a long spatula turner to scoop up the cheese and the bun, turning it over so the cheese lays in the bun.

8.      Add a cooked hot dog to each bun.

9.      Serve with any additional toppings you want.

10.  Enjoy.

SOFTWARE

·       4 hot dogs (I recommend Ball Park beef franks)

·       4 hot dog buns

·       1 T. unsalted butter, melted

·       1 c. shredded Mexican blend cheese, divided

·       Additional toppings as desired

VARIANTS

Instead of grilling, use the oven to cook the hot dogs. Set your oven for 400 degrees. Place the scored hot dogs on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper. Cook for about 12-15 minutes or until crisp. You can also brown the buns and melt the cheese in a skillet over medium heat, but you will probably need to do them in shifts.
